Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, Emotional Intelligence and Globalization

Do some research and answer the following critical thinking questions from this week’s readings in an essay format. Ensure you have a good introduction, body, and conclusion in your essay. In your analysis, cite a minimum of three (3) references from different sources.

  1. Analyze the four key elements of emotional intelligence and how they apply to a useful manager. Are there any elements that most managers find that they need to develop or improve? If so, why. If not, why not?
  2. According to Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, he suggests people are motivated by two things: how much they want something, and how likely they think they will get it. Expectancy is the belief that a particular level of effort will lead to a particular level of performance. Apply Vroom’s expectancy theory to explain why a manager’s level of effort in an organization and their level of effort is reflective of their level of performance.  Explain your rational.
  3. Discuss how the trend toward globalization is impacting the need for companies to effectively manage diversity.

Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship building are four key elements of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence elements are interrelated with the expectancy theory. The manager in the company may also expect different things and observe the employee expectancy at different levels.

Answer 1: Emotional Intelligence

Self-awareness can help to assess personal strengths and weaknesses, which can create an impact on behavior. Self-management can help to manage stress and emerge effectively in changing circumstances. In social awareness, an individual integrates with emotional cues. Relationship management is the fourth component of emotional intelligence. Building strong bonds with others is effective in an organization to sustain better work efforts. The manager can apply these four emotional intelligence elements. For Instance, the manager in the company can use self-awareness to contain the work improvements. When working or emerging in the competitive work environment, the manager can utilize or exploit strengths and evolve with time. The element of self-management is better for a manager in the company to deal with tog or complex working conditions. It seems interesting to observe the manager adjust his behavior and attitude to manage the work.  In the work environment, the manager can integrate cultural values to manage the work effectively. Employee diversity is in the limelight, and the manager has to adjust him accordingly. These elements are better for the manager to contain the work improves. The management has to become a future leader in an organization, and through perfectly utilizing these elements and depicting effective emotional intelligence, the difference can be made (Johnson, 2017).

Answer 2: Vroom’s Expectancy Theory

In an organization, the manager depicts a certain level of work. He expects a certain level of performance due to the level of effort. Interestingly, it is a perfect application of the Vroom’s expectancy theory. The manager in the company puts his efforts into the workplace. An organization may have some performance measures or rewards for managers or employees. They may expect that he will have the reward or meet the performance standard or measures through a particular level of effort. The manager can reinforce the same behavior or effort to experience expected outcomes. Therefore, the manager’s level of effort in an organization and their level of effort are reflective of their level of performance.  Every manager in an organization may have expectations. The work behavior, attitude, skill, knowledge, and improvements are triggered by the expectancy (Koontz & Weihrich, 2006).

Answer 3: Globalization

In this globalized business era, the management of the company may face immense employee diversity. Different employees come from different cultures and according; they may have different expectations.  To manage diversity effectively, the management of the company has to adopt artificial intelligence to avoid unconscious bias. In the employee screening and management process, it has become an effective trend. Interestingly, despite containing the difference in cultural values, the most important thing for the manager or the company is to combine these cultural values and build a diverse team to meet the goals and objectives of the company. Consolidating employees’ efforts from different backgrounds is the best approach to make them relevant to the company.  Global organizations have managed diversity through removing language and cultural barriers. The modern organization usually wants to bring the diversity at the skill level. Cultural diversity can be eliminated through cultural integration when conducting business in other countries (Kilbourne, 2010).

In the end, it is to conclude that the company management must navigate employees’ expectations. Organizational strategies must be made for internal stakeholders as well as build a strong workforce and get the advantage over the other rivals. Employee diversity can be managed effectively through applying four elements of emotional intelligence.
