Upper Echelons in Professional Sport: The Impact of NBA General Managers on Team Performance

  • This study is based on the general manager that works with the team. This article reflects the light on how the team performs well in the organization. How the general manager takes decisions in the situation of the team or leading the organization.
  • GM = general manager; NBA = National Basketball Association; MSA = Metropolitan Statistical Area.
  • The professional sports organization’s performance is measured by two methods.

Methods:

  • The variables used for this study are independent and dependent on nature.
  • The population took for this study GM and team members NBA session 1997-1998 that ending in the 2014-2015 season.
  • The sample for this study was 82 different GMs that were employees of previous sessions. The method of data collection used was observation.
  • The data of the U.S. and Canada were challenging to collect.
  • Win and efficacy were dependent variables that fall independent variable category.
  • The number of total seasons of NBA and GMs was independent variables.
  • Aid was controlled variable.
  • Two franchises are given data and see the impact of team revenues. The ability could be related to GMs and influence of the team, winning ability how much enhance with team collaboration.
  • The total sample took 489 team season employees’ observation and also included 82 different GMs.

  • It is concluded that NBA team players do a difficult task. Unique experience and characteristics play a vital role in enhancing the performance of an organization. This study is important for the elite level talent in players that indicates positive returns towards the general manager.
  • This study helps our understanding of how upper levels interact with the team and take decisions in an organization.
