Team Roles

Teams have different needs, and people in organizations should be selected for a team to ensure diversity and expertise to fill various roles.

Introduction

Teamwork in an organization has a direct impact on organizational performance. For an organization, it looks imperative to increase team efficiency and productivity. However, defining the role for the team is mandatory. The nine roles of the team are the implementer, resource investigator, plan, monitor, shaper, coordinator, completer finisher, team worker, and specialist. Three team roles have been selected in this study to get more insights.

Three Team Roles

Team Worker

The effective team member is a team worker. He has to put all his efforts to bring harmony or togetherness in the tea. Interestingly, he has to create a pleasant atmosphere to work in the decision and enhance the visibility of the creative work. I was working in a team of sales assistants as a sales manager. In pressure situations, he maintained the focus and collaborations and made effective decisions with some mutual concerns. It was a wonderful experience with a team member who accomplished his role through integrity and collaboration instead of depending on others. Truly, he was a great team worker. The participative approach makes the team member an effective team worker (Belbin, 2012).

Shaper

Shaping the task to meet the goals and objectives of the team is a big challenge. The team member can be a shaper. The shaper is willful and committed to getting the job done on time.  Interestingly, the shaper effectively identifies issues or challenges in the team process and makes early decisions to sustain the work.  In the team process, it is necessary for the team member to work in a challenging or pressure situation to enhance his learning and team performance.  The frustrations may emerge due to complex tasks and limited time. However, the shaper can get things going effectively. In a retail store, I worked in the inventory team. We had to supply the bundle of products in different stores on time. My inventor and manager were a shaper. He accepted this work as a challenge and depicted the promising behavior to get the job done on time. He was determined or committed to meet deadlines. Remarkably, he enabled the delivery even before time. To avoid frustration, he communicated and divided the work among all team members. Thus, he shaped the task in his style and met the deadline effectively (Belbin, 2012).

Coordinator

Coordinating is one of the most prominent roles in the team.  A better coordinator in the team has always intended to identify the skills and capabilities of others and allocate tasks. He uses the potential of people effectively and wants them to explore their skills. Integrating with the needs and wants of members is a key role, which justifies the best coordination. Through coordinating, the member has to delegate the work. However, imposing much work to others is not a right approach, and it should be avoided in the team.  In college, I participated in a community project, related to community services. Being a volunteer, I was a part of the team. My friend was playing the role of the team coordinator. Exceptionally, he identified my talent and capability and wanted me to deal with customer service. It was a perfect delegation of work, as he focused on some administrative activities (Keen, 2003).

Conclusion

In the end, it is to conclude that every team member should understand his role and contribute to the success of the team in an effective and lucrative manner. Three prominent roles have been streamlined along with personal experience. Perfect execution of roles is impactful, and it can increase team performance and productivity.
