Personal Reflection: The Story of an Hour

The story basically reflects the idea of marriage relationships these days and how complex they are. When a woman learns about her husband’s death, it is truly a very sad moment for her at first, but as she gets exposed to newer and better opportunities in life, she realizes how much she was missing out. According to my opinion, a successful marriage demands a lot of attention and compromises, especially on a woman’s part. From making choices as little as choosing your room color to as hard as giving up your job to move to another place for the sake of your partner’s career; marriage is all about compromises.

When Mrs. Mallard got the news of her husband’s death from her sister; she was indeed devastated because I think Mr. Brently Mallard and her were a couple for quite a long time and just the thought of living without somebody who has been a significant part of your life for such a long period freaks people out. Things such as how that person treated you or what kind of a relationship you had with them become secondary. Just the thought of being exposed to a change that you were not ready for, no matter how much you wanted it, overwhelming.

I believe Mrs. Mallard would be a self-loving person in her youth, who would love to keep her personal interests above others, but love might have caught her badly and further the society’s pressure had kept her to continue her marriage despite all the issues and difference of opinions with her husband. When she realized that it would only be her alone now and finally, she could live her life with absolutely no restrictions it was such a joyous moment for her. Thus, the news of that joy turning into a dream took her life.
