African American Military Spouse and Support for Military Families-Persuasive Essay

Part 1: Collection of Sources

Purpose

The research is purposeful, as the intention is to evaluate certain challenges that military families experience, along with the rationale for the probable support by the government. An African American military family has stumbled due to isolation, which affects mental health and childcare. So, the point of proof is that these problems are not personal, as these are national issues.

Research Question

What daunting gaps exist for military families, and how do these gaps influence the family’s well-being and military readiness?

In the context of this question, the answer is certain. Military families are facing some challenges, such as a childcare shortage due to excessive staff turnover, social isolation, and a lack of support for children. The military spouse survey revealed that 50% of spouses failed to integrate with the community. Almost 16,000 children must wait for the care at the base. Of course, there is a high level of anxiety and depression among military children, and it is due to excessive mobility and parental deployment. So, pertinent government action is needed.

Biased Sources

Arguments, which are to be built in the essay, can be weakened due to biased sources. Using military advocacy testimonials with data can lead to some opposition. Therefore, I have selected the edible source to streamline multiple perspectives. RAND research is triggered by the nonpartisan think tank. The wellness survey has been conducted at the university level. Eventually, a peer-reviewed article also brings good authenticity. So, the objective data is visible in each source instead of just opinion.

Diverse Perspectives

I can back my position through multiple viewpoints presented by these sources. The RAND report presents the standpoint of the military leadership and childcare staff who struggle due to ineffective compensation and excessive turnover. Wellness survey included the voices of spouses, which helped to understand the prevalence of isolation and negative influence. Lastly, in the academic article, the negative influence of mobility or relocation on mental health and academic performance is illustrated.

Supports

The article from Stars and Stripes indicates the insights from RAND research that optimize the military childcare staffing. It is a viable source because it rationalizes the ongoing problems of the childcare waitlist at the base due to staff turnover and low pay. It directly connects my argument about the need for government action in the military childcare interventions.

The wellness survey from Texas University streamlined the data from almost 1200 military families, making it a viable and credible source. It gives evidence of social isolation as a primary challenge, which also supports my personal journey and my call for an effective community integration program.

The academic article highlights the frequent relocation and its negative influence on children’s mental health. It is a credible source because it gives a good understanding of the unique stressors that military children usually experience in schools. Thus, the findings from this article highlight the need for school-based support programs, which justify my argument for extended mental health services.

Part Two: Persuasive Essay with Research

American soldiers pledge to protect the nation by fighting on the battlefield. The major contributor to this massive sacrifice is the family that holds the home. Families, including children, must repeatedly move and detach themselves. This problem has helped to identify the need for effective support systems for these families. It is possible by enabling access to psychological support, reasonable childcare, and deep social cohesion (Siebler & Frederick, 2022).

The whole family volunteers with the soldier. I am an African American military spouse with two children who have experienced this reality. No doubt, we always support our heroes to fight and protect, but it often becomes too costly. For instance, we usually must stay in states that are distant from an expanded family unit. It has been hard to live in unknown regions, making the isolation more probable. Of course, this isolation has become a formidable national issue, and an adequate national reaction is needed. In this context, there is a need to support these families with adequate resources to make them flourish instead of just making them persist in unfavorable circumstances (Svan, 2025).

Relocation has been a major problem, as we usually become detached from our support networks. For instance, we got the “permanent change of station”, which refers to PCS, and we had to leave our forerunners, buddies, and the whole community. For military families, it has become a widespread issue. Research indicates that the military family’s mobility or relocation is three times higher than that of the ordinary civilian family in the United States. This common issue is turning into a backlash, as unfavorable outcomes, such as high cumulative exhaustion and a sense of isolation, are the consequences. Apparently, when it comes to the families of colors, this isolation usually augments, as far as the struggle to find communities for the sense of cultural belonging is concerned (Akers, 2025).

Concerning this frightening problem, the government needs to play its role through practical support, especially in the mental health and childcare domains. The situation is adverse because families normally wait for a long time to have on-site childcare. The unwanted outcome is that spouses must compromise their careers and pay for the exorbitant private sector care, which further sets the foundation for the financial difficulties. If the family doesn’t get effective and timely childcare, there is a possible distraction in the military services. Obviously, when mental health and childcare are not ready and provided, military preparedness is compromised. Apart from that, mental health support, notably counselling for spouses, is even more critical to get rid of solo caregiving and contribute to their well-being (Siebler & Frederick, 2022).

There is a notion that the military has already provided enough support, especially through the combination of personnel support services. Even before signing up for the job, the family usually knows the requirements and outlook. So, families must live with this. On the other hand, this notion sidelines the shifting demographic profile of the military and modern materiality in the dual economy. There are worthy services through morale, welfare, and recreation (MWR), but the focus has remained on leisure instead of core needs. Putting all things on the family to live with this is a disregard for their sacrifice. Certainly, the military job is hard, and we need to make the nation’s dedication stronger to justify these sacrifices. Once the families are strong and sturdy, service members can also show more toughness while protecting the nation on the grounds (Svan, 2025).

At the government level, the intention of the government should be to foster community connections. For instance, military bases have remained a major barrier. Instead, these bases must operate as a source to build a connection with the neighborhoods. The positive transition is expected to occur if the government arranges a professional development pathway for spouse and community liaison officers to connect families with the community, spiritual points, and nearby networks. For example, the African American spouse can be linked with the local mentor who has a good insight into the area to enable a welcoming experience instead of isolation. So, the purpose must be to make the new area a new home. One of the viable possibilities is that the government must invest in and leverage the social service support systems. The resourceful and empowered social workers at the community level, especially in schools, can enable selective interventions based on their better ecological understanding. A tailored approach is always critical for military children at the community level to meet their unique needs and expectations. (Siebler & Frederick, 2022).

It concludes that the military can foster more fortitude and adaptability when families are in better well-being. Conventionally, families with consistent relocation or moves have stumbled due to isolation. The situation became worse because childcare and mental health support have remained ineffective. Labeling this as an act of service is justified to some extent, but there are some other ways to change the situation. The objective should be not to leave these people behind but give something back against their sacrifices for the nation (Svan, 2025). It is time for the government and military officials, especially leadership, to make some interventions, such as augmented funding for on-base childcare, enrichment in mental health support, and more input in the community alignment program.
