Walmart Is Accused of Punishing Workers for Sick Days

It’s no secret that in the last 20 years big box retailers like WalMart have run the little guys out of business. Part of what makes our economic system great is the choices we have and the diversity of products. However, can a company get too big? For this post you will want to:

  1. Find a news article discussing an ethical issue involving companies that haven’t always acted ethically that has taken place in the last 20 years.
  2. Summarize and state your opinion on the topic

Summary of Ethical Issue

Wal-Mart is punishing workers for sick days. It has been happening for many years, as according to the employees, the employer of the company contains unethical activities. Despite having laws such as disability acts and family and medical leave act, different violations have occurred. It is a fact that the employee has to miss work on occasion. Unethically, the company does not review the circumstances of each employee. It creates problems, as employee turnover is increasing with the passage of time.  For Instance, the employee may come up with doctor’s notes or hospitalization record. Usually, it has been observed that the company seems strict in reviewing these notes. Employees usually get back to work, as the company may fire the employee. Thus, employees have not been treated by the company ethically for many years, and it is the best time to review the employee policy (Abrams, 2017).

My Opinion

According to my opinion, it seems unethical.  The employee should be facilitated by the company in case of any complexity. Facilitating sick leaves is a social responsibility of the company. As far as work performance and productivity is concerned, the company is capable of shifting employees. The fair and ethical employee policy can help this retail chain make a good reputation in the competitive retail market. The most important thing is what the company does for employees. Integrating with employee needs and making some appropriate strategies is a prominent ethical business consideration. Now, in this contemporary era, the company can get too big through ethical employee policies. Work performance and productivity will be increased, as it can also increase employee motivation as well.  Wal-Mart, being a top retail chain of the company, can also emerge as an ethical employer. Ethically, when the company creates a good relationship with employees, it gets extraordinary outputs.
