Unit 2 Journal-Bill Of Rights

Do you believe that some rights are missing in the Bill of Rights? Why, or why not? If you could add another amendment, what would it be, and why?

The American constitution is a very rigid document; rigid in a sense that it is not easy to amend it and the entire exercise, of amending the document is time-consuming and cumbersome. In addition, the amendments introduced to it seldom become part of the document in their original form. However, despite the fact, James Madison introduced Bill of Rights, comprised of a series of amendments, in the year 1789. Though, Congress approved only 12 amendments. Out of these 12 amendments, only 10 amendments were ratified by the states, which continue to be subject to great debate (Foley, 2014).

We have to understand and acknowledge that political, economic, and social thoughts, of a particular type, emerge during a certain period and during this period, these notions, and perceptions have relevance. All these amendments, which were introduced, approved for debate and ratification, and eventually ratified, were relevant during that period. However, at the time, the relevance of some of the amendments has definitely reduced. For instance, the Second Amendment was relevant during that period; however, at the time, its relevance has reduced. In fact, it has created all sorts of challenges for states and the federation. The amendment allows the states to form and regulate militias. In addition, it permits the citizens to keep and bear arms. During that period, when the Federation posed a threat with its military, this amendment was valid, but today it is not. However, I do believe that the bill of rights can be improved further. For instance, an amendment which aims to ease the electoral process (the casting of the vote) and encourages voters to vote (no use of force) can be added to the Bill of Rights. That amendment should direct state and federation to devise such strategies and methods, acts, which ensure high participation in the electoral process. Another amendment could be regarded easing the process of amending the constitution.
