Residential mobility and the family context: A developmental approach for Boys and Girls Clubs of America
Part 1
Literature Review and research question/hypothesis
The key research that inspired this study is the mobility of family and children in the United States and many other countries. It is a fact that mobility usually occurs due to the development or change in the family. However, many other factors are revolving around this issue. The purpose of this study or research is to examine the key causes of Residential mobility in the family context (Anderson, Leventhal, & Dupéré, 2014).
Hypothesis
Residential mobility is associated with the low-income family structure, financial barriers, early family developments, maternal problems, inter-parental conflicts, and further academic demands, and ultimately, these elements are linked to the lower quality family context process.
It has been revealed that childhood mobility is triggered by different factors. Elements of the hypothesis indicate several factors such as family structure and family process. The hypothesis explains that residential mobility is quite visible in middle childhood and adolescence. Children usually depend on parents at this age. For Instance, to meet the academic needs and live in the good society can be a reason. On the other hand, parents may move due to high house rent and impact of neighborhood poor society on the child’s performance. People who are established, financially and have a well-structured home are less likely to move. Thus, in the content of the family, these are some factors that can cause mobility (Anderson, Leventhal, & Dupéré, 2014).
Methodology
In this research study, the authors have used both qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect data or information. The main source of the data or information is SECCYD. However, more than ten sites, which contain information regarding residential mobility and the family context, have been used by authors to conduct a comprehensive analysis. Through the quantitative approach, the authors have come up with some numbers, which indicate the historical background of the residential mobility along with some current trends. On the other hand, the qualitative approach has helped to navigate or examine previous works and study to get some key insights. Residential mobility, family structure, and family process are three different measures. For Instance, if the number of families is reducing every year and replacing with new ones, families are moving. Also, a change in employment status may also change the family structure, and it seems a big measure to assess the residential mobility. The quality of the home environment is also a strong measure. If the quality of the home environment is good and satisfactory, people may avoid moving (Anderson, Leventhal, & Dupéré, 2014).
Results
The relevant finding or result of this research study shows that residential mobility is associated with the family structure and process, especially in middle childhood and adolescences.
Discussion
The key point, which is to be derived from this finding or result, is the family process and structure. The family structure can be changed due to childhood and adolescent needs such as academic fees, learning environment, development and type of education. To meet these needs, there can be a change in parental employment, which is also a prominent factor, as far as residential mobility is concerned. The audience should know that residential mobility can occur in middle childhood and adolescence, and they have to be ready to integrate with this big shift.
