Public Figure Framing

Find an example of a public figure using reality, objectivity, or legitimacy framing. Copy it here for us and explain a few the circumstances surrounding the event. Do you think the speaker’s use of framing helped his/her credibility? Why or why not? What else could the speaker do to improve his/her credibility?

Bill Gates is head of major technology organization, Microsoft, and he is a prominent public figure. He is one of the richest people in the world.  Being a business celebrity, his intentions about the society, communities, and reality are quite different. Recently, he has warned the European leaders regarding the people’s mobility and migration in an interview, gave to the German Welt am Sonntag newspaper. At this event, he was speaking to the international journalists, business people, economists, and several global leaders. He said that the European leaders would find it tough to maintain or manage the immense range of people who intend to come from Africa and other developing regions. Bill Gates framed the increasing trend of migration as a threat for the countries, concerning the terrorism threats, economy spikes, and limited capacity of the countries. He demonstrated the objectivity framing, as economic and business gains have been described apart with the issue.  He shows his credibility by the sense of investigating and observing the economies and business along with the several threats, which are emerging. This framing helped his credibility, as the ideas and reservations were admired.  For improvement regarding his credibility, he could come up with the business perceptive and a solution for the migrants. He might increase the credibility if he could talk with both perspectives (Pleasance, 2017).

Topic 1 – Ethics describe an ethical dilemma you faced in an organization. What frame did you view it through? What did you do? What should you have done? Why?

When working in the company, I faced the ethical dilemma. During my duty in the workplace, my manager came to me and asked me to stop the machine, as it was his interest. On the other hand, I had to sustain the workplace to meet the demands of the customers, instructed by the top management. I was bound to follow the instruction of the manager, and conversely, I was supposed to meet my targets. It was an ethical dilemma for me, and I had to choose the one, which contained the least impact. I viewed this dilemma as legitimate framing, as I thought that the manager might have the personal benefit, which is against the organizational policies.  I went with the manager, as I turned the machine off, as I had to follow the manager instructions. Being a worker, the manager seems a leader. Obviously, it was unethical to stop the work and go to the manager for personal work, but to reduce the risk of the conflict between manager and me; I preferred this decision. It was a legitimate framing, as I could sustain the work process and report to the plant manager. The reason for this possible initiative was the work sustainability and a reduction in the unethical activities.

Topic 2 – Steps in Change Which of Kotter’s steps in effective change do you think is most critical? Why do you believe that? What does it say about your frames?

In the Kotter’s steps in effective change, the most critical step is developing the vision. In this step, the management of the company has to develop the core values or competencies to create a vision, which is to be communicated to the different stakeholders. I think this is the main reason, which makes this step quite crucial. Interestingly, when developing a vision and realizing the change in the company, immense resistance may occur. Many people or stakeholders in the company may disagree with the vision, as it may talk too much time of the management to come up with the vision, which can be accepted. Normally, in both, the small and large organizations, it seems tough for people to understand and the vision. Concerning this crucial step, it seems a reality framing, as people, despite having the intentions cannot understand the vision along with the impacts and insights. Thus, when conducting the change, the reality framing must be used to get the awareness and make the change happen in an effective and lucrative manner.
