Mainstream Media and Political Issues

Discuss and provide an example of how the media shaped your opinion on a politician or issue, but subsequent research led you to change your opinion.

Various studies have inferred that the media not only provides information but also influences opinion, in a very subtle manner. For instance, regarding the Iraq War, Western media in general and American media, in particular, endorsed the viewpoint of American government, which led many to believe that Iraq really possessed weapons of mass destruction and it had the intention to attack western and American targets all around the world. However, when time proved all these allegations false, I became quite apprehensive of mainstream media and started to explore other means of information, which were considered unconventional means of information. However, I must acknowledge that still large chunks of information, which I retrieve through different means by using various instruments, comes from mainstream media. However, I no more acknowledge a piece of information without verifying its validity from other independent sources.

For instance, during the 2016 democratic primaries, liberal mainstream media was supporting Hillary Clinton and discounting Bernie Sanders, who was quite popular among the Millennials. To understand the real difference between the candidates and to learn, who could be a better candidate for president, I did my research and I found out that Bernie was a far better candidate. I was not sure about Bernie Sanders, because of propaganda against him of being on far left. However, when I explored his history and learned about his political ideology and stances, I realized that his views were not outlandish, as it was claimed by mainstream media. His politics were very conventional and in many industrialized countries, these political-economic ideas had been implemented.

Therefore, this propaganda, against a candidate indirectly aided me to support him. On many occasions, mainstream media have been found tampering with information to shape opinion. This tempering of information has been discussed in detail by intellectuals, such as Noam Chomsky, which is why; I do not allow mainstream media to influence my opinion. Now, I acquire information from news outlets such as CNN and BBC and then I verify the validity of information.
