Inside the World’s Best Companies

Rolls-Royce is one of the most expensive brands in the automobile industry. It is due to the selection of the operational process, which further leads to operational excellence. This choice of operational process has become a source of sustainable competitive advantage. For instance, the organization has made the operational process service-oriented, as it is a competitive choice as far as the influence on customers is concerned. Going beyond traditional maintenance and adopting data-driven approaches are the best considerations. The operational team has concentrated on solutions instead of products. It is all about assessing the customer's needs and streamlining engine-related solutions. Certainly, operational optimization has become valuable for customers, and it has enhanced the competence of the organization. The operational optimization has been visible due to incredible craftsmanship. For example, they prepare leather for cars by focusing on details and validating craftsmanship (Eightify, 2023) The process of craftsmanship is well embedded in operations, as each piece takes nearly 4 hours to assemble. This process type is a combination of luxury and differentiation, and it leads to a sustainable competitive advantage due to inimitability (Duggan, 2011).

Operations managers and leaders can derive multiple learning aspects from this example of operational process types and excellence. For instance, operational managers must understand that differentiation is the only way to set the foundation for sustainable competitive advantage. In the highly dynamic and competitive industry, craftsmanship has become one of the integral processes that make the brand different. However, continuous learning based on customer needs and expectations is essential to remain competitive. Operational managers and leaders must strive for more innovative approaches, especially from the perspective of customers, and Rolls-Royce is the perfect example of this (Eightify, 2023). However, the operational function must become resilient and flexible as far as the shift in customer preferences and new trends in the industry are concerned (Duggan, 2011).
