Information System

Workgroups often develop information systems solely for their own needs. However, over time, the existence of these separate systems can result in information silos that can cause numerous problems. In an essay, describe the problems that information silos can create. Then explain how information systems can overcome these problems.

Solution

In an organization, the information system may be unable to communicate with another system, which is a depiction of information silos. The system cannot work with the unrelated system, and it can create many problems. It seems worthy to overcome these problems to sustain the business process.

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY INFORMATION SILO

The big problem that the information silo can create is lack of information flow. Obviously, there are many barriers in the information sharing process. One department cannot share important information with the other department, and it creates barriers in collaborations and decision-making process. Also, the information silo causes the differences in priorities in the company. Due to lack of information exchange, the company cannot demonstrate a consensus on different issues. Different priorities can divide the business, which can hit business objectives and goals hard.  Furthermore, when a department sets a goal regarding the work, the implementation seems difficult due to the insufficient information. Goals and objectives of one department cannot be integrated with the main objectives or vision of the company. Normally, in the presence of information silos, employees contain the perception that their work does not work in the company (Gleeson).

HOW TO OVERCOME IT

In this modern and dynamic business era, the big solution for information silo is the seamless data integration. The bridge for the information flow is necessary to establish in the company to help department have and execute the information. The appropriate action plan is enhancing the data integration through the consideration of the hosted server. The digital transformation of data can integrate with the department of the company, which can increase the engagement, collaboration, and decision-making process, However, to adopt this, there is a need to redefine goals and objectives regarding the information system in the company (Lucky).

The information silo is a huge threat to the business sustainability. The data integration is the pertinent solution for the company. However, in the implementation process, the improvisation is necessary, as data integration can be evolved with the passage of the time.
