Scenario

You oversee a team comprised of four different generations. As the manager, explain what management theory or theories (classical, behavioral, and management science) you would adapt to effectively lead your diverse team for effective production, employee commitment, and high morale. Also, explain why you chose those theories. Describe how you would apply those theories to each of the different generations to foster a collaborative team.

Solution

In an organization, the manager has to lead or oversee a diverse team. There are many members of the team, who are associated with different generations. Normally, in this contemporary business era, a team may depict Millennial and Gen Z. The best way to deal with this team is to use the behavioral management theory.  According to this theory, I can manage the team through navigating or understanding the behavior of team members. Understanding the generation gap, traditions, and values can help to derive behaviors. Through assessing the behavior, I can identify causes of conflict, motivation and assertiveness. To enhance the visibility of effective production, commitment, and high morale, I would like to integrate with the cultural values, which affect the team behavior. Each member will be dealt with differently to enhance motivation and commitment. Overall, team productivity can be improved through accelerating individual performance (Pollak, 2017).

The big reason to select this theory is to derive some key behavioral insights regarding employees. The big advantage that the team leader or manager can gain is the harmony. Through investigating the behavior of team members of different generations, it seems easy to assess needs and wants and delegate accordingly. I would like to apply this theory to manage different generations in a team by creating a collaborative culture. In a collaborative culture, people have to cooperate despite having generation differences. Combined tasks and multitasking are some key traits to increase the assertiveness of employees. The culture of togetherness is imperative to apply the behavioral management theory because it streamlines the behavior of employees when working together. Conversely, togetherness can also improve the behavior of employees with the management. Thus, this theory is to be implemented effectively (Pollak, 2017).
