Define the Five Barriers to Effective Listening. Explain what nonverbal signals are/and how they may affect communication between individuals. Describe a situation you have been in where you believe the message received or delivered was misinterpreted because of one of the barriers to listening AND/OR because of nonverbal signals. Was the communication resolved?

BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE LISTENING

There are several barriers to the effective listening. Distraction due to different factors, interruptions, emotion, noisy environment, and mind wandering are some prominent barriers to effective listening. The distraction in the communication process may create the disturbance, which reduces the attention of the listener.  Due to emotions, people do not listen to the message carefully. In the noisy environment, the message cannot be understood. Unnecessary interruptions can change the whole meaning and structure of the message. Mind wandering depicts the absence of mind when listening to someone (Guffey and Loewy).

NON-VERBAL SIGNALS AND IMPACT

Body language, distance, and physical appearance are some nonverbal signals, which create an impact on the listening process. In the communication process, these signals enable people to contain the perception of each other. Based on these perceptions, people derive meanings.  The impact of these non-verbal signals can be positive or negative. For Instance, if a person is speaking with a strong body language, the impact is positive.

SITUATION OF MISINTERPRETED COMMUNICATION

I was working in an organization. The production environment was very noisy. It was tough for me to understand the instruction of my supervisor. Initially, there were different mistakes, which were observed due to the noisy environment. For Instance, I turned off machines due to this misinterpretation (Guffey and Loewy).

SOLUTION

The misinterpretation was resolved through reducing the noise in the production house. For Instance, employees were given smart earphones, which were good to communicate with supervisor and several stakeholders.  It was the best solution, which enables the precise information or instructions from the supervision (Guffey and Loewy).

It is important to eliminate all barriers, which usually emerge in the active listening process.  The combination of both, verbal and non-verbal traits should be adopted to enhance the visibility of effective listening process. It enables the effective communication and better engagements.
