Discuss some of the contemporary political questions regarding religion in society such as prayer in schools, the Ten Commandments posted in the classroom, etc. What is your position on these issues?
When we talk about contemporary political questions regarding religion, we often wonder what is permitted and what isn’t. Is praying in public schools allowed? Is it forbidden to play religious music in classrooms? Are students and teachers allowed to say ‘Merry Christmas’ in schools? Is it permitted to post Ten Commandments in the classrooms and so on?
Although the school sponsored prayers were banned in 1962 by the U.S Supreme Court, but Bill Clinton, in 1995, issued a memo that said that students are allowed to offer prayers to anyone they want at whatever time of day as long as they are not initiated by the school itself. My stance on this issue would be the same. The students should be given the absolute freedom to choose and practice their religion. There should neither be any kind of pressure on them from their schools to pray for this or that God, nor should they be deprived of their right to practice their religion. All kinds of religious activities should be allowed in the school’s premises as long as they are done privately and without imposing them on others.
The Ten Commandments cannot be posted in classrooms under the constitution. I think it is pretty justified as although most of the commands in the ten commandments are universally accepted and are followed in all the religions of the world, but it also contains few commands that might prove to be offensive to other religions. Commands, like not to steal and murder, not to commit adultery or lie in court, are commonly held beliefs, but asking the people to only follow The God of the Bible or else they will be punished makes this paper unconstitutional. Posting it in the schools will only increase divisions, violence and school shootings.
