The basic premise/argument of the book/interview, Orientalism/Edward Said, is that preconceived notions, of westerners (Europeans/Americans) regarding the Middle East, are the product of an end-process. It means that special interest groups have used various kinds of instruments (Hollywood/Media) to develop a particular type of precepts and perspectives regarding Middle Easterners. For instance, most of the Europeans and Americans are not aware of the fact that culturally and religiously, the Middle East is a very diverse place & its history is very rich and linked to Mesopotamian history and civilization. In fact, all the contemporary Middle East civilizations are derived and evolved from Mesopotamian civilization.
This manipulation or shaping of views, regarding the Middle East, serves a grand political agenda and allows the United States and Europe to devise and implement a very stern and unfair policy regarding the Middle East, which is not questioned by the people of West. However, when we study deeper, we learn that small, but powerful interest groups & lobbies use their monetary power and political influence to affect general perception. Their medium of influence is many, which include media/Hollywood that is used to catastrophic effect. Thus, as per video, it is small, but powerful interest groups, that are responsible for these adverse preconceived notions. There is overwhelming evidence that supports or endorses the claims of Edward Said. For a very long period, prominent intellectuals are pointing towards these special interest groups and lobbies, which have contaminated American and European political systems. In fact, some of the intellectuals are of the view that media is employed by these interest groups or lobbies to manufacture consent. Also, in political systems, large corporations and special interest groups can spend millions, by law, which allow these corporations and groups to influence the political system. Therefore, I agree with the basic or central argument with Edward Said, as there is enormous evidence in its support.
