Comparative Analysis Final Paper
Introduction
Trends in contemporary leadership are changing over time. Authors have come up with varying perspectives about leadership along with the valuable practical implications. This comparative study will revolve around two authors/books, which streamline these leadership perspectives and implications. Comparing and navigating these insights is crucial to understanding how they influence the body of knowledge about leadership. It is all about understanding leadership from multiple perspectives and setting the foundation for new narratives and takeaways.
This comparative study emphasized two books, " Leadership Research Findings, Practice, and Skills” and “How to Win Friends & Influence People”, written by Andrew DuBrin and Dale Carnegie, respectively. Analyzing these books and their main themes is the right approach to compare and contribute to leadership knowledge.
Leadership Research Findings, Practice, and Skills
Andrew DuBrin's book is an excellent source of understanding leadership and its practical implications. This book streamlines the skill-building and practical approach regarding leadership practice. The book perfectly balanced the existing research and models with the actual application as far as the progressive practitioners in the modern business climate are concerned.
Critical Themes and Implications
DuBrin perceived leadership as a shared responsibility and cooperation (DuBrin, 2022). For instance, leadership is not the responsibility of an individual, as it always requires coordination and collaboration with groups and organizations. At the graduate level, I have understood that leadership is changing with time, as the top-down approach has become outdated. I previously perceived the influence of individuals as leaders, but this book contributed to my knowledge about delegation, autonomy, inclusiveness, and engagement (DuBrin, 2022). This theme or narrative indicates hands-off leadership or Laissez-Faire Leadership, as delegation and autonomy are relevant factors in these leadership approaches. At the graduate level, I have studied these leadership approaches or styles. However, these further insights or narratives are making me get deeper into it. This book made me realize leadership can be successful in a collaborative climate in the internal business climate as far as the expectations of teams and groups are concerned.
DuBrin perceived leadership as a relationship (DuBrin, 2022). The effectiveness of leadership can be justified if building and sustaining relationships are apparent. Of course, the most important thing is to build and maintain long-term or sustainable relationships with employees, peers, and many other stakeholders. At the graduate level, I have derived implications in this context. For example, I have realized that the leader must strive to understand the team dynamics (DuBrin, 2022). In the contemporary workplace, a diverse range of employees or team members may contain varying perspectives or narratives and even reservations about issues. So, active listening and setting the foundation for a positive relationship are good considerations. Excessive productivity and cohesion can be achieved, and it is what the leader can get as outcomes.
DuBrin also optimizes the role of leadership and its connection with organizational performance (DuBrin, 2022). For instance, the author has highlighted leadership approaches or strategies that can be implemented for better employee engagement, productivity, sustainability, and success of the organization. As a graduate, I must know the importance of participating in leadership development programs. The author made me understand the meaning of performance-oriented leadership, and it always requires competencies, skills, and capabilities. I also know that the role of the leader in cultivating a positive culture is essential. Instead of just understanding leadership from the perspective of strategic management, there is a need to get deeper into the connection between leadership and organizational performance. Indeed, it is also a significant contribution to my knowledge.
Practical Insights and Application
DuBrin includes quizzes, self-assessments, and skill-building activities to help students or readers comprehend the need for relevant competencies and qualities. The book provides an opportunity to evaluate leadership qualities and competencies at the personal level. This modern research is combined with practical insights, which leaders can use to boost their competence and confidence to justify effective leadership.
How to Win Friends & Influence People
Dale Carnegie's book is a classic. Comparatively, it is different from DuBrin's approach to understanding and streamlining leadership. For instance, Carnegie concentrated on several interpersonal skills and human relationships. Indeed, this book is complete with compelling leadership implications, which also contributed to my body of knowledge as a graduate.
Themes and Implications
Setting the foundation for positive relationships is one of the main themes of this book (Carnegie, 2017). However, relationships are complex in this book, and a leader must strive for sincere interest in others. Active listening has been one of the delicate facets for DuBrin, but Carnegie came up with other factors, such as empathy. Collaboration and care are two different facets. Carnegie clarified this difference. For example, at a graduate level, making the team members feel the care of the leader is the best way to validate effectiveness (Carnegie, 2017). Understanding the perspectives is the best way to set the ground for a positive work culture in the internal business setting. Carnegie’s approach to leadership, with the combination of factors, makes it different, and it enhanced my knowledge about leadership.
Persuasion and influence are interrelated with each other, and it is also one of the best themes in this book. Interestingly, Carnegie highlighted how to create an impact on team members or followers at the broader level (Carnegie, 2017). It is all about streamlining strategies or techniques to be influential. Indeed, the aspect of persuasion must be maintained to create influence. At the graduate level, I have studied the need for change for the organization to be relevant and competent. In the change function, the leader’s influence and persuasion are critical as far as the inspiration and motivation at the employee level are concerned. Influence and persuasion remind me of the transformational leadership approach that I studied at the graduate level. This additional leadership knowledge has also made me explore transformational leadership. I have understood these techniques and traits to become an influential leader, especially in a change or demanding situation. And it is the best contribution to my knowledge about leadership.
Communication is also one of the compelling themes in this book. Carnegie streamlined the significance of communication in the leadership process. However, communication is about more than communicating vision and directing others (Carnegie, 2017). Carnegie explained that communication can be used for appreciating, praising, avoiding criticism, and building constructive connections. Again, this communication approach is the best way to create influence and make the whole environment friendly. At the graduate level, I may need to be made aware of the real-time business climate. Indeed, the business climate can be hectic and demanding, which can lead to conflicts. Thus, based on this new knowledge, I realized the importance of effective communication to set the ground for trustworthiness, conflict resolution, and collaboration.
Practical Insights and Application
Carnegie comes up with the new principle. This principle, “depicting the interest in others," has been successful in contemporary business. As a graduate, I need to understand that I have to work with teams and many stakeholders in the organization as a manager or leader. Thus, I need to learn the art of understanding others. This enduring advice motivates or inspires leaders and graduates to concentrate on comprehending and connecting with people.
Reflection
DuBrin and Carnegie highlighted valuable insight and implications about leadership by hitting specific themes. DuBrin has been a theory-driven individual, but Carnegie understood leadership from the perspective of interpersonal wisdom. These two varying narratives can help graduates or even the existing leaders in the organization to become well-rounded leaders. This new body of knowledge, derived from these books, can facilitate coming up with the best combination of human connections and skills. As a graduate, I am willing to take this insight to enhance my understanding of leadership and adopt things that can lead to effective leadership in the organization.
Conclusion
It concludes that both authors have different perspectives on leadership. The most important thing was to navigate the themes that are described in these books. These themes and practical implications boosted my knowledge about leadership, and I will carry this into the professional setup. This comparison has become the base for becoming an effective leader. Leadership functions are complex. It is dynamic and changes with time. Thus, graduates and existing leaders need to take these insights or modern perspectives to enhance their leadership effectiveness.
