In any team, problems will arise, and team members will have questions about the conflict and how to resolve it. Members across departments must collaborate and contribute to the resolution of any unhealthy form of team conflict. Based on “Case One: ElectriGov” (found on page 177 in your textbook), answer case questions.

Why is it important for an organization to have a mission?

Missions are important because these can assist in providing the focus of the business on what is important for the business, for the stakeholders and for itself as well. It is important to every kind of business to establish its mission, whether it is privately owned or publicly owned. The main aim of the mission, which is also the main reason for its significance, is that it provides direction for the management of strategic and operational judgments in day-to-day routine work. It also acts as the gluing agent for all the business to be held together for following a single unified direction (Dyer, Dyer, & Dyer, 2013).

Why is it important for team members to know their roles in a team?

Certainly, it is important for team members to know their roles in the team clearly. It is important for them to know what is expected of them on the team. Without knowing what is expected of them will only create confusion in their roles and would depict in the efforts which would seem like directionless. Furthermore, team spirit will not build up if team players are not aware of their part in the team. It will mean that the results of the team effort will also not be credited to them as they do not know what their role in it was. With the apparent expectation of roles in team, faith, a shared sense of goal and achievement are some of the positive by-products (Sabrautzki, 2010)

Is competition within a team a good or bad thing? Explain your response.

There can be various reasons which can be given in favor of competition in teams. However, this may lead to savage rivalry as well, which has its disadvantages. However, opposition is not necessary to happen at a personal level at all times. When individuals are formed into groups and are asked to compete with each other, the competition can be healthy. This call leads to positive outcomes as compared to the case where employees work together. Assistance, devolution of power, communication skills can be improved through these activities. On the other hand, some disadvantages can arise as well. This team rivalry can lead to competitions which can make individuals dislike each other if one team for instance always wins against the other. It can lead to the gap between having or not having some talents, assets, or resources for both groups causing lack of trust in the system and harmful work behavior (Dyer, Dyer, & Dyer, 2013).

Why is it important to set short- and long-term goals when planning a meeting regarding conflicts? Provide examples.

It is significantly important to set long-term as well as short-term goals while planning the meeting for conflict resolution. It is important because this can cross out any biases and associations with either party. Moreover, it can also become more effective and set the direction for the meeting as well and ensure that the meeting does not go meaningless. It ensures the efficiency of the meeting by helping finish the meeting with some achievements in hand (Sabrautzki, 2010).

What is an unhealthy agreement? Why is it significant for leaders to understand how to resolve conflict and avoid unhealthy agreements?

Indeed, it is important for leaders to have an understanding of how one can resolve conflicts. The art of conflict resolution is important for leaders to have for solving problems of conflict among associations, groups, and departments. For better conflict resolution, a leader can take the following steps to ensure efficiency.

  1. Setting the Scene for supporting excellent association by showing shared respect and keeping the problem separate from emotions and directing the matter towards its solution.
  2. Collecting information on the interests of the people, listening to their grievances and concerns, and their fundamental requirements would establish a good foundation for better understanding the problem at hand. It is important that the leader is capable of gaining trust from both parties and can listen to both arguments equally. Having an objective mindset and not personal and looking at the consequences of the decision to both parties helps as well (Dyer, Dyer, & Dyer, 2013).
