Subject: How is Google Inc going to use the challenge of a disruptive technology of Artificial Intelligence to get the competitive advantage over its competitors?
- a) The evaluation of the business value is reconsidered due to the disruptive technologies and new business models. Businesses and companies are faced with the challenge of disruptive technologies like the Internet of Things, Cloud computing, Virtual Reality, and Artificial Intelligence. These disruptive technologies require the companies to follow a disciplined strategy for converting these into opportunities and starting revenue streams by identifying the underlying inherent risks. The innovative strategy that needs to be adopted by companies for exploiting this opportunity is imperative (Burrus, 2017).
- b) Artificial Intelligence has been identified as the powerful driver of a hard trend which is now a certainty. Being familiar to consumer devices like Alexa, Siri, and Home, the potential of Artificial Intelligence is highlighted by the event when the supercomputer of Google defeated the Grandmaster in Go game which is considered as one of the most complex board games. The computer used Artificial Intelligence software. The race to develop artificial intelligence with greater impact in time as compared to the competitors is becoming more aggressive, companies are investing billions in leading the race. It has been warned that this disruptive technology can eradicate jobs, start wars, and break laws. However, these predictions are related to the long-term future. The current competition is between the tech giants who want to dominate the Artificial Intelligence world now. Companies who are involved in the tech industry but is not considering Artificial intelligence as its core than it is inviting competitors to override you in future.
Even though Chinese firms like Alibaba and Baidu are also hugely investing in Artificial intelligence, the most visible prospects of this disruptive technology are the western companies (Vincent, 2017). While Google has to keep an eye on the investments of Alphabet as it is perceived to be in the lead and has the best researchers as well. Microsoft and IBM have also heavily invested in research in Artificial Intelligence and are publishing their papers but are not requiring it to be applied to their moneymaking products. On the other hand, Apple and Amazon are not taking huge research initiatives, but are working frantically behind closed doors on AI to feed into their products. Google and Facebook are in between these companies by investing in researching AI for its moneymaking ventures.
Google along with Amazon has gone further regarding the application of artificial intelligence. Google is using Artificial intelligence to categorize its YouTube content and weed out the material which can be objectionable and identify the people in its app of Google Photos to group them. It is also embedded in the operating system for working smoothly and predicting which apps are more popular among the people. On the other hand, Google Brain is considered one of the best groups of research in the application of advances in machine learning profitably (The Economist, 2017).
- c) However, there could be some important factors in this regard as well. Social factors like access to the best talent which can aid in the growth of Artificial Intelligence is instrumental to the challenge as well. Artificial Intelligence is all about the right people. A highly magnificent AI device will look bad if not controlled by the right people. AI talent is in high demand for this reason. Another factor can be the economic and political conditions. Like, the Chinese government is giving full leverage and opportunity to Baidu Inc and Alibaba to dominate the world of Artificial Intelligence. It will play an important part as well. Technological factors like which company has the best technology and access to the best technology is also an important factor. These factors along with the economic condition of the countries in which these operations are important, as well as the success and possible dominance in AI in the future.
