The question that true leaders are born or made, an age-old question, is as intriguing today as it was earlier. There has not been one definite answer to this question. However, it is true that if the leaders were only born, then the industry of leading consultants and experts emerged during the last decade would not be justified.
Leadership is a process through which one individual influences other individuals for the accomplishment of goals, guiding them by ensuring a coherent and cohesive direction. Many theories of leadership have emerged in the last decade. The oldest use of the word “leader” in the English language has been used regarding its meaning as “to travel or to show the way.” Therefore, one thing is sure that all leaders, made or born should show a direction, or has a clear vision. We know that the leaders are thought to be borne by looking at the ones who did not get any organized learning process for leadership skills and were legendary leaders of their times.
Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders of all time subsequently laid the foundations of the modern South African state. With 27 years of imprisonment, he has been successful in the formation of a single nation with a certain future (Farmers Guardian, 2011). The qualities that leadership is evident of possessing includes majorly the sharing of the vision with the subordinates or followers, the consideration of the follower’s perspective, the guidance of the followers by providing them information, and the encouragement of self-initiation in the followers (Caspar, Le, & McGilton, 2017). These are the skills that can be learned. Some may think that leadership is a trait of individuals, and some persons are born with these skills, while some may believe that emotional intelligence can be developed. However, in my point of view, some individuals are born with these skills and traits, but leadership can be learned by individuals who are committed to doing so.
