Describe the differences between democratic, authoritarian and totalitarian systems of government. Give examples of each and a critical evaluation of each system’s pros and cons.
Democracy, authoritarianism, and totalitarianism are the three forms of government having certain similarities and differences in the aspects of politics and implementing the law. Democracy is the fairest form of government to date. It provides every individual with the right to influence governmental procedures and policies. People have the right to vote and elect their leaders. Democracy happens to be the only system of government that protects every individual’s right and provides its citizens with political, civil, economic and religious freedom. Authoritarianism, on the other hand, grants political authority to a single person or a group of people. Individuals do not have the freedom of speech and have limited influence on governmental procedures and public policies. However, unlike totalitarianism regime, it does not interfere in the personal matters of the public. Totalitarianism, as the name indicates, extends total control to the people who are in power. Individuals are deprived of their rights to freedom of speech, religion and even such personal affairs as family planning.
Canada, Norway, and Denmark are the examples of democratic countries. Singapore and Modern China follow the authoritarian form of government while Maoist’s China and Iraq under Saddam Husain’s rule were believed to be observing totalitarianism regime
Democracy do provide individuals with the right to elect their government, but this government, when empowered, is capable of shifting to authoritarianism or even totalitarianism regime through corruption and misuse of power. It is the biggest drawback of democracy. Authoritarianism is capable of imposing laws and policies in a disciplined manner as the government has the central power. But it gives lesser freedom to the people. Totalitarianism is a kind of dictatorship giving almost no rights to the citizens. But as the government has all the authority, rapid and radical changes can be implemented easily.
