Assessing Parenting Skills and Attitudes: A Review of the Psychometrics of Parenting Measures

Summary of the Article

Parenting skills are in the limelight, and several measures have been developed for the pertinent assessment. Behavior, beliefs, mechanisms, stress, and disciplines are different skills and practices, which are to be assessed. These are psychometric measures and provide the necessary information to the practitioner. This article has been written in two phases. In the first phase, the author navigated different articles to collect the data. In the send phase, the author streamlined the Coding Procedures for Psychometric information. Interestingly, 25 measures have been identified to assess parental skills or related information. The clinical or non-clinical population is included in this research process (Hurley, Huscroft-D’Angelo, Trout, Griffith, & Epstein, 2014).

Major Findings

The major finding in this article is the single rater format measures. It makes the single rater information less reliable and applicable. The lowest acceptable rating can only be derived from only four measures. Thus, the visibility or applicability of these measures is low. Another major finding of the article is the lack of scoring procedures. It has been revealed that only 14 measures contain the scoring procedures, which leads towards limited results when assessing parenting skills. For different characteristics such as age, ethnicity, and gender, only one measure is used. The article presents results regarding the parenting skills. However, much work is to be done to identify the high or low parenting skill. The measure can be changed with the time, and it can be modified according to different age groups (Hurley, Huscroft-D’Angelo, Trout, Griffith, & Epstein, 2014).

Is the report written and understandable?

In my opinion, the report is not written.  It is tough to understand due to complex sentence structure and numerous technical worlds without abbreviation. The author also mentions in the results that measures are not up to the mark to assess parenting skills effectively. Especially, the result and discussion section cannot be understood because the author has mixed many things. For Instance, in the result section, results regarding the parenting skills assessment should be illustrated. The author only describes some measures and their applicability to assess parenting skills. Thus, it seems tough to find results from this article.

Is the language unbiased?

The language is unbiased.  The author looks straightforward in this research process, as he only describes measures and techniques. He seems focused and presents only relevant information, which keeps the language unbiased. His main targets are parenting, measurement, and psychometric assessment (Hurley, Huscroft-D’Angelo, Trout, Griffith, & Epstein, 2014).

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the research?

The major strength of the research process is the comprehensive analysis of the applicability of measures, which have been derived from the different source. The research has created a platform by identifying these measures. On the other hand, the major weakness of the result is the lack of workability of these measures. It has been revealed that only 14 measures meet the criteria to assess parenting skills. Thus, limited research and results lead towards limited discussion about the facts, and it has been considered as a big weakness of the whole content.

What are the primary implications of the research?

The major implication of the result is different measures or psychometrics for different age groups. Parents’ behavior may vary with the passage of time. Thus, the change in psychometric at the right time fo5r the right age group may lead towards the authentic result. For a better assessment of parenting skills, there is a need to develop only pertinent psychometrics, which is applicable and contains acceptable ratings (Hurley, Huscroft-D’Angelo, Trout, Griffith, & Epstein, 2014).

What would you do to improve the research?

I would like to spend more time in the research process to develop or identify measures which contain the reasonably acceptable rating. The most important thing is to ensure the workability of applicability of measures. It may make the whole research process relevant, and some predictable outcomes can be ensured.

Introduction

The relationship between parent and child is quite visible. However, some interactions can be observed through assessing parental behavior. In this research process, developing some assessment approaches is a big challenge. When investigating, many measures are outdated and lack strong psychometric. The most important thing is to pick up the right measure to assess the skill.

Methods

In this research process, the qualitative method has been used. The author has reviewed many other sources such as articles to collect the data and develop different measures. In the first phase, eligible articles and manuals are navigated. In the second phase, the coding procedure for Psychometric information is shown.

Results

The result shows the diverse population of different measures. Only 14 measures provide the information regarding the score. The range of five measures is 18 to 1,224. According to the result, Nurturance is the most reliable measure that can assess the parenting skills. It can portray connections and different ways to display (Hurley, Huscroft-D’Angelo, Trout, Griffith, & Epstein, 2014).

Discussion

The scoring procedure and manuals are limited in this research process. However, instead of making all measures work, it seems necessary to find the most reliable measure that can streamline the connections and enable effective assessment.
